Walmart Settles U.S. Opioid Lawsuit Alleging Unlawful Pharmacy Dispensing
Walmart reached a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice over claims that it repeatedly violated the Controlled Substances Act by unlawfully dispensing opioid prescriptions from its pharmacies. The DOJ said pharmacists dispensed prescriptions that compliance staff knew were invalid. In March 2024, a judge narrowed parts of the case. The CDC cited over 905,000 opioid overdose deaths from 1999 to 2025.
