Vodafone Group and Aditya Birla Group proposed merging Vodafone India and Idea Cellular in 2017, creating an operator with nearly 408 million customers. Vodafone Idea integrated networks, launched the Vi brand in 2020, and raised about Rs 18,000 crore in April 2024 to expand 4G and start 5G. It signed network equipment deals worth ~Rs 30,000 crore in Sept 2024 and allotted Rs 36,950 crore equity to the Government of India on April 8, 2025 after converting spectrum dues.
