U.S. Department of Energy grants fund Alcoa microwave critical-mineral pilot

The U.S. Department of Energy announced $162 million in grants for nine private projects to recover critical minerals from industrial and mining byproducts using experimental technology. Alcoa was selected to pursue a pilot in Bauxite, Arkansas, using a microwave-based approach to extract critical minerals from existing bauxite residue. Alcoa said it is pleased to have been selected for award negotiations with DOE.
