United Utilities Water Ltd was fined about £900,000 after a pipe collapse at Fleetwood Wastewater Treatment Works led to raw sewage discharge into the Irish Sea for more than 35 hours, triggering a swimming ban. Preston Magistrates Court heard UU admitted five environmental permit offences, including discharges from coastal pumping stations outside permit conditions. The Environment Agency said the incident had far-reaching impacts on local residents and businesses, including tourist areas such as Blackpool and St Annes.
