United Spirits Challenges FSSAI Flavouring Order for Rum and Whisky Labelling
United Spirits, Diageo-owned, moved the Bombay High Court against an FSSAI order tied to McDowell’s No. 1 Rum made at its Baramati plant. FSSAI had barred sale of certain rum and whisky products, saying rum flavouring cannot be used on rum or whisky flavouring cannot be used on whisky. United Spirits says the case concerns labelling of a single product and cites legal advice that it follows long-standing industry practice, with no material impact so far.
