Travis County Withholds 9% of Tesla Tax Rebates Over Safety Concerns
Tesla provided its general counsel’s report to Travis County officials ahead of a vote on project tax breaks, arguing the deal supported the county’s economy and meeting performance requirements. Safety concerns, tied to the matter of Ramirez’s death and Tesla’s safety record, became a sticking point, and commissioners withheld 9% of Tesla’s scheduled 2020–2022 rebates. The 2020 agreement runs through 2041 and could secure about $14 million in the first decade if requirements are met.
