Chinese government-backed hackers linked to Salt Typhoon targeted hundreds of telecoms to steal phone records, including through unusual activity detected by T-Mobile. After months of searching, T-Mobile traced access to a compromised system connected via another carrier’s router, then sent its cyber chief to a data center in Bellevue, Washington, and physically cut the cable to stop the breach.
