Tailings Spill Reaches Easter Creek at Agnico Eagle’s Detour Lake Mine
Agnico Eagle says its spill detection system immediately alerted staff after a tailings pipeline cracked at the Detour Lake gold mine in northern Ontario. The pipeline failed Aug. 29 while carrying treated mining waste, prompting workers to inspect the area, isolate the damaged line, and stop further discharge. Containment, recovery, and remediation measures were deployed, with sampling and field assessments guiding additional cleanup and whether long-term monitoring is needed; the company has not released spill volume or affected-area size.
