Sunnyvale, California launched Sunnyvale Beam, an on-demand service charging a flat $3.50 for trips anywhere within city limits and $1 per additional passenger. Seniors 65+, youths 13–18, people with disabilities, and low-income residents pay $1.75. The first three rides are free, with the program partly funded by a $4.2 million state grant and the city paying the rest over five years, while drivers earn $23–$25 an hour.
