A CREA study estimates air pollution from Sasol’s Secunda coal-to-liquids plant in Mpumalanga could cause about 1,000 deaths each year, plus roughly 2,030 asthma emergency room visits and 1,100 pre-term births. Using emissions data from Sasol reports, researchers link impacts to PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide from SO2 and hydrogen sulphide. Sasol says it is reviewing the findings.
