Starbucks Korea 'Tank Day' backlash drives Emart to operating loss
Starbucks Korea’s May 18 ‘Tank Day’ promotion, criticized for evoking the 1980 Gwangju Democratic Uprising crackdown, contributed to Emart’s Q2 consolidated operating loss of 43 billion won. SCK Company, in which Emart holds 67.5%, reported an 18.4 billion won operating loss on 747.3 billion won sales. Emart said SCK will focus on restoring consumer trust amid protests, while other retail units posted profit gains.
