South32 sells aluminium chain to Alcoa in $4.1bn deal
On July 1, South32 announced it will sell nearly its entire aluminium chain—bauxite mining, alumina and aluminium processing—for $4.1bn in cash and shares to Alcoa. The deal shifts South32 away from smelting and refining, cutting operating assets from eight to four, while Alcoa assumes $750m in asset-level debt. South32 says proceeds help fund development assets, notably copper.
