A 6.8 earthquake hit Kumamoto, Japan, forcing Sony Semiconductor’s Kikuyo-machi plant to evacuate and halt operations on July 28. Damage to the Kumamoto site and manufacturing lines is being evaluated, with no confirmed major damage elsewhere in Nagasaki, Oita, or Kagoshima and no casualties. Restarting resumed in stages from Aug. 4, 2026, and the factory has now reached normal full output, expected to return to pre-quake levels by mid-August.
