Sainsbury’s has suspended live facial recognition at an East Dulwich London branch after a customer was wrongly challenged as a shoplifter and told to leave. The customer said staff identified him using AI camera flags and that he was later apologised to by head office. Sainsbury’s blamed human error, but critics and prior similar incidents have renewed calls to scrap the technology.
