Rio Tinto Marks 60 Years of Pilbara Iron Ore Operations in Western Australia
Rio Tinto marks 60 years since the first Pilbara iron-ore shipment left Dampier for Japan in 1966. The company says it has shipped more than 8 billion tonnes, grown into one of Western Australia’s largest private employers, invested around $500 million in community initiatives over five years, and spent a record $12 billion with WA businesses in 2025, with Karratha events including an NBL game and clinics for nearly 500 juniors.
