Raúl Torrez pushes New Mexico social media safety bills after $942m Meta verdict
Raúl Torrez is drafting two New Mexico bills to strengthen consumer protections and child safety online, building on the state’s case against Meta. A March jury found Meta misled users and knowingly harmed children’s mental health while concealing what it knew about child sexual exploitation, leading to a $375m maximum state fine and $942m total liability. The legislation would fund youth mental health treatment, with remaining money for awareness, prevention and screening, and has support from Deb Haaland.
