NHTSA has opened an investigation into Tesla’s decision to launch its new Cybercab on public roads without a steering wheel or pedals. The agency said Tesla self-certified the vehicle’s compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and is now reviewing the certification process, technical data, and whether the certification relied on determinations that certain standards don’t apply.
