Mariana and 18 more cities back Vale-BHP dam collapse reparations deal
A Vale-BHP compensation and reparation deal for the dam collapse has gained support from 45 of 49 eligible municipalities, including Mariana, after 18 more cities joined. The agreement, ratified in October 2024, sets payments of 170 billion reais, with 6 billion reais earmarked for affected cities. A London High Court ruling in November found BHP liable under Brazilian law, with a damages trial expected to start in April 2027, while four cities remain open to joining.
