JAL Joins Pilot to Capture CO2 From Seawater on Okinawa Island

Japan Airlines joined Hitachi and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines in signing an agreement to run Japan’s first pilot test of Direct Ocean Capture on Kume Island in Okinawa. Containerized equipment will pull dissolved CO2 from seawater, return treated water to the sea, and collect real-world operating and environmental data. The partners also aim to develop a small-scale carbon economy and use captured CO2 for next-generation aviation fuel.
