IBM and NASA Release Open-Source Lunar AI Model Improving Crater, Ice Detection
IBM and NASA released on Sept. 10, 2026 an open-source Lunar Foundation Model for planetary research. Built as a geospatial AI using 17 years of Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter data, it aims to aid searches for lunar ice, map craters and volcanic terrain, and support landing-site selection for Artemis. NASA and IBM say it improves detection accuracy by up to 23% over common methods.
