Ransom-seeking hackers used phone-based social engineering to target dozens of prominent U.S. financial institutions and other businesses over the past month, according to Google’s threat intelligence and internet data. Google declined to say which firms were actually compromised. The tactics reportedly include help-desk spoofing and contacting employees on personal cellphones, sometimes with the correct number.
