The FDA approved Zanvastro, the first medicine for extremely rare, often fatal Alexander disease, developed by Ionis Pharmaceuticals. Zanvastro reduces production of a protein that forms toxic clumps and progressively damages the nervous system. In a study, treated patients were significantly more stable on a walking test. Zanvastro is set to become available in the U.S. in coming weeks.
