Eni says it will aim to open a commercial magnetic fusion plant in Europe by the 2040s, building on a long-standing partnership with US firm Commonwealth Fusion Systems. The company has been a shareholder since 2018 and supports fusion research with UK and Italian institutes. CFS expects net fusion energy gain by 2027 and plans its first 400 MW ARC tokamak plant in Virginia for early 2030s, supplying homes and industry.
