DOJ Expands Beef Affordability Antitrust Probe to Costco and Others
The DOJ Antitrust Division expanded its investigation into beef affordability to include Kroger, Publix, Walmart, Albertsons, Aldi, Ahold Delhaize, Costco and Amazon, citing potential antitrust violations in U.S. cattle and beef markets. DOJ said it is reviewing more than 3 million documents and interviewing industry participants, and sent letters to the eight retailers about recent retail price increases. The probe is linked to food security and shrinking domestic cattle supplies.
