Coles and Woolworths trial facial recognition to tackle store crime
Coles and Woolworths have begun early-stage trials of facial recognition in stores to explore options for tackling theft and violent incidents and to improve staff protection, especially in Victoria. The firms have already invested in anti-theft cameras, exit gates and body-worn cameras. The move follows a Wesfarmers privacy ruling and revised regulator guidance allowing use to counter serious crime, though no deployment decision has been made.
