CNI Moves Ahead on Hybrid Locomotive Program to Improve Efficiency
Canadian National Railway is advancing its hybrid locomotive development, with three units in testing. The program targets better fuel efficiency, reliability, and performance while extending yard locomotive life and cutting emissions. A pilot delivered up to 50% fuel-efficiency gains, fewer engine failures, less idling, and quieter operation. Upgrades include solid-state batteries and a larger 2.8 MWh system paired with a Tier 4 engine.
