BP and United Steelworkers seek federal mediation over Whiting lockout
BP and United Steelworkers Local 7-1 are urging each other toward federal mediation as the lockout of more than 800 workers at the BP Whiting Refinery approaches six months. The union cites BP proposals to eliminate or outsource 100+ union jobs, cut base wages, reduce bargaining rights and strike ability, and end seniority protections. BP cites an offer affecting about 65 employees plus voluntary options for about 40 craft workers.
