Baker Hughes reports U.S. rig count up 52 year on year, mixed by type
Baker Hughes said the total U.S. rig count was up 52 rigs, or 9.7%, from a year ago, but mixed this week: oil rigs fell five to 447, gas rigs rose five to 132, and miscellaneous rigs stayed at nine. In the Permian basin it was unchanged at 267, while Texas rose by one to 282. The wider rig count has fallen in recent years as firms prioritize returns and debt paydown, with WTI prices expected to rise in 2026 on Middle East supply disruptions.
