Alstom to Build UK’s First Battery-Electric Long-Distance Train Fleet

Work on creating the UK’s first battery-electric trains for long-distance main line services is set to begin in 2028, under a nearly £1bn Department for Transport investment. The plan is expected to support more than 350 jobs at Alstom and about 6,000 across the supply chain, with journey times cut between Manchester and key northern cities. The trains will be bought by Rock Rail and leased to TransPennine Express.
