The Department of Energy announced $162 million in grants for pilot projects to recover critical elements from industrial feedstocks. Alcoa USA Corp. was selected for a project to explore extracting minerals from existing bauxite residue, including gallium-bearing red mud, using bench- and pilot-scale facilities. The effort aims to diversify U.S. supply chains for energy and defense.
