Albertsons to Close More Safeway Stores After FTC Blocks Kroger Merger
Albertsons is closing additional Safeway stores as it reassesses its retail footprint after a Dec. 10, 2024 federal court preliminary injunction blocked the proposed $24.6 billion Kroger merger. In fiscal 2025 it closed 35 stores net of openings, cutting sales by $63.4 million, with closure and surplus-property costs rising to $45.1 million. Capital spending totaled about $1.83 billion, and the company is working to place affected employees in other jobs.
